In 1992, as Colombia faces an era of drug violence, car bombs, and daily power outages, a young mother in Bogotá receives an internship opportunity in the US and eventually must decide between her dreams and her family.
Mientras en el año 1992, Colombia atraviesa por una época de apagones eléctricos y sufre la violencia del narcotráfico, una madre joven de Bogotá recibe una oportunidad de pasantía en los EE. UU. y finalmente debe decidir entre su sueño y su familia.
Director’s Statement
After making films for almost a decade, Bogotá Story is the first one that takes me back to my roots in Colombia. Though fictional, it's a very personal film inspired by my parents and the challenges I don’t remember living through as a baby.
On a broad level, the film depicts a common, worldwide experience held by those who are forced to envision a brighter future in a place they don’t call home, potentially leaving behind a profound sense of meaning and identity.
On a more intimate level, it asks questions about our duty to our families versus our duty to ourselves. As a Colombian who grew up with a single mom in the States, these themes and questions have been a natural obsession for me since I was a child.
Carta del Director
Después de hacer películas durante casi una década, Bogotá Story es la primera que me lleva a mis raíces en Colombia. Aunque ficticia, es una película muy personal inspirada en mis padres y los desafíos que no recuerdo haber vivido cuando era bebé.
A un nivel amplio, la película resume una experiencia mundial común de aquellos que se ven obligados a imaginar un mejor futuro en un lugar al que no llaman hogar, dejando atrás un profundo sentido de significado e identidad.
A un nivel más íntimo, hace preguntas sobre nuestro deber a nuestras familias versus nuestro deber a nosotros mismos. Como colombiano que creció con una madre soltera en los Estados Unidos, estos temas y preguntas han sido una obsesión natural para mí desde que era niño.
